What’s Going In My Carry-On (as a mom of two littles)

Long gone are the days of travelling light. No matter how I pack, unpack, and repack, it’s next to impossible to fit everything I need for my kids, never mind for myself. And one thing you should know about me? I have a full-blown fear of losing luggage. I’m not sure if there’s an official name for that, but there should be.

So when I take off, I’m taking off carry-on only style, maximizing every allowed piece of luggage to the brim and planning my packing down to the tiniest accessory.

If packing was an art, I’d consider myself da Vinci. It’s not my first rodeo; there have been many. The difference now? As kids grow, necessities change. The diapers and formula that once took up half my bag have been replaced with bigger clothes, entertainment, and (of course) snacks, snacks, and more snacks.

But some things have stood the test of time.

Here are my non-negotiable carry-on essentials when travelling with kids. Whether you’ve got infants, preschoolers or kindergarteners, you’ll be glad you packed these.

1. Sound Machine

Honestly, this one should come whether your kids are travelling with you or not.

When you go from sleeping in separate rooms to sharing under 300 square feet, every tiny sound matters. A cough, a sniffle, someone rolling over…it’s enough to wake the whole crew. And let’s not even talk about snoring.

A sound machine helps muffle it all. It creates a consistent sleep environment in an unfamiliar space, which is huge for kids (and parents). Bonus: when the kids are down by 8, you and your partner can actually relax, watch something, or chat without whispering like you’re in a library.

2. The Meal Bag

This is not just a travel thing, this is a life thing.

My meal bag is always packed and ready, even for last-minute dinners out. Because let’s be honest, a kids menu and a couple of crayons aren’t cutting it for long.

Inside mine:

  • Crayola Color Wonder markers (no mess, no stress)

  • Pre-cut colouring sheets to go with the above

  • Extra crayons (because they will fall on the floor)

  • Mini Play-Doh containers with stamps or cutters

There’s something about getting to play with Play-Doh at a restaurant that feels like breaking the rules in the best way. And as long as colours aren’t being mixed into a chaotic swirl, cleanup is quick and easy.

Depending on the restaurant, I’ll also toss in:

  • Disposable placemats

  • Kid-friendly cutlery

It’s a small effort that makes a huge difference in how enjoyable the experience is for everyone at the table.

3. Rain Jackets (and Fast-Drying Footwear)

Layers are a no-brainer. A change of clothes? Always.

But rain? Rain can derail a day fast.

Wet clothes and soggy shoes take forever to dry, and if you need to rewear them later in your trip, it’s a problem. That’s why proper rain gear is essential.

I love a good poncho moment (cheap, packable, easy), but for kids, fit matters. A proper waterproof rain jacket with a hood is your best bet.

And if you’ve got littles in a stroller? Never leave without a rain cover.

You won’t need it…until the one time you don’t pack it. That’s just how the universe works. I don’t make the rules.

4. The Meds Bag (AKA Everything But the Kitchen Sink)

This is where I don’t take chances.

Coughs, fevers, scrapes, mystery rashes…I come prepared for all of it. And if you’re flying, kids’ medications are allowed in your diaper bag even if they exceed liquid limits. So really, there’s no excuse not to pack what you need.

My go-to list:

  • Hand sanitizer (more than you think)

  • Band-aids + antibiotic ointment

  • Fever and pain medication

  • Immune support spray

  • Motion sickness patches

  • Ear pressure relief (bulb + drops)

  • Decongestant rub

  • Anti-itch cream

  • Any prescriptions

But beyond the supplies, pack a little knowledge too. Know where to go in an emergency, and if you’re travelling internationally, don’t skip travel insurance.

Prepared = peace of mind.

5. The “Mom Rescue” Bag

Because moms need care too.

We’re carrying the bags, the schedule, the mental load, and let’s be honest, a little bit of guilt too. So yes, I’m making room for a few things that take care of me.

Inside my mom rescue kit:

  • Hydrating eye patches

  • Face mist for a quick refresh

  • SPF lip balm

  • Headache relief

  • Tums (because travel meals hit different)

  • Bloat support supplements

And yes, like many of us I save my Sephora samples for trips. It’s the easiest way to bring a little luxury without taking up space. Just make sure you’ve tested anything new before you go (learned that one the hard way).

A Little Extra Planning Goes a Long Way

If space is tight and your destination allows it, consider grocery delivery when you arrive. It saves luggage space and ensures you have essentials waiting for you.

Because no matter how well you plan, something always gets forgotten.

Keeping your essentials close means you’re ready for anything—and that alone makes travelling feel lighter.

Because when you’re prepared, you can actually enjoy the trip instead of reacting to every little hiccup along the way.

And yes, I’m definitely packing plenty of snacks.
